Local Lesbian Website Aims to Increase Acceptance

Posted on Saturday 26 April 2008

Hello,
My name is Jane Warring. I’m a 27 year old attorney and I live in Midtown.

Some friends and I are starting a lesbian website targeted toward Atlanta women from about 20 to 35. The purpose is to strengthen the community and build acceptance. We want it to be informative and fun - with blogs, a calendar of events, and articles on topics we’re interested in. We want to get college students involved - either helping with the website design, conducting interviews, drafting articles, editing, taking pictures…you name it.

Thank you!
Jane Warring

Jane has been invited to come speak with Pride Alliance at one of our Fall meetings, but if anyone would like to contact her in the meantime, her e-mail address is janer429@gmail.com .

Study of Cultural Backgrounds at Lehigh

Posted on Saturday 26 April 2008

Dear Student,
My name is Aimee Adams and I am a doctoral student in counseling psychology at Lehigh University. I am writing to request your participation in an online survey about undergraduate and graduate students’ cultural background and their perceptions of college counseling services. Although all are welcome, I am particularly interested in gaining the perspectives of GLBT students, because their views are often underrepresented in counseling research.

The survey will take approximately 15 minutes or less to complete. To thank you for your participation, you are invited to enter a raffle for 1 of 8 $25.00 Visa gift cards and 1 of 20 free Blockbuster video rentals. Please click on the following link or cut and paste it into your browser if you are interested in participating in the study.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=m9fr2dk3CR_2byY332yAIZeg_3d_3d

Your participation is completely voluntary and you may skip any question you do not wish to answer. Once you press the submit button at the end of the survey, your responses will be anonymously store with all of the other responses. Your completion of the questionnaire will constitute your informed consent to participate in this study. This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Lehigh University.

Please forward this invitation to any undergraduate or graduate student who you think would be interested in participating in this study.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Sincerely,
Aimee Adams, M. Ed.

NLGJA Student Video Project

Posted on Tuesday 8 April 2008

For the sixth consecutive year, ABC News is sponsoring the Student Video Project at the annual convention of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA), which is being held in Washington, D.C. this August. Participating students will have a rare opportunity to work in an immersive setting with network television journalists who will help them shoot, write, edit and deliver polished packages that will be seen by the hundreds of working members of NLGJA at the end of the convention. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible, and the program is open to students of any sexual orientation. In addition to the mentorship and tutelage the students receive, the convention also provides important networking opportunities. Students are given the chance to attend select convention activities - and a number of recent alumni received offers from stations that found them through their work with the Student Project. The application deadline is Friday, April 11, 2008.

TEAROOM Screening

TEAROOM: a document presented by William E. Jones

*a featured work in the 2008 Whitney Biennial
*filmmaker in attendance

Southern Voice review at http://www.sovo.com/2008/2-15/arts/feature/8139.cfm

In Mansfield, Ohio, 1962, police hid behind a two-way mirror in a public restroom and filmed the men who had sex there - the so-called “tearoom trade.” They used this film footage to arrest and prosecute some sixty men under the Ohio sodomy law.

In 2007, filmmaker William E. Jones came into possession of the film shot by the police. From this footage, he created the film Tearoom.

In Tearoom, instead of making a run-of-the-mill documentary, Jones lets the unedited footage speak for itself. The surprising imagery raises many issues even as it provides a shocking history lesson. A haunting and powerful work, Tearoom has been selected for the 2008 Whitney Biennial.

Screening in Atlanta one night only!

Director William E. Jones will be on hand at Eyedrum to introduce the film, answer questions and debut the new book on Tearoom.

290 MLK Jr Dr Suite 8 / 404-522-0655 www.eyedrum.org

It should also be noted that “the footage is explicit in spots, and inappropriate for those under 18. However, while explicit, the footage is historical in nature and not pornographic in nature or intent.”

Relay For Life

Posted on Thursday 8 March 2007

Pride Alliance is sponsoring a team for this year’s Relay for Life. Relay for Life is an event aimed at supporting those who have or have had cancer, as well as raising money to help fund the fight for a cure. Unfortunately, we will be unable to actually attend because it conflicts with this year’s Glitter Pop, which will be help on April 13th. Basically, we’re looking for people to join the team and support it. The link for our team’s page is:

http://www.acsevents.org/gatech2007/pride

There is a ten dollar registration fee, but that doesn’t mean it has to come out of your own pocket. If possible, try to get someone to sponsor you by explaining to them what Relay for Life is all about. We’re hoping to see some support, and maybe next year, if the dates work out, we’ll be able to go and be represented at the event.
